The flag's basis is the red and white flag of the Duchy of Courland during the Biron period. This is symbolic because since 1561, the territory of the historical Suiti region was part of the Duchy of Courland, and from 1738 to 1795, it was the private property of Dukes Ernst Johann Biron and Peter Biron. Precisely because of this fact, during the subsequent Russian Empire period, the region belonged to the Russian state, and the peasants here had much greater freedom than in areas privately owned by nobles. This is sometimes used to explain the Suiti's direct speech and such character traits as individualism and stubbornness.
