The shield of the coat of arms is vertically divided into two parts. On the right side of the coat of arms, on a red background, a silver griffin with a sword in its right claw is depicted, which is borrowed from the coat of arms of Vidzeme, and signifies the city's belonging to the specific region. On the left side, on a gold background, a black anchor is depicted, symbolizing a port city.
