The shield of the coat of arms follows the division principle of the national flag colors – a red background divided by a silver stripe. Across all three stripes, facing the upper left corner of the shield, is a white sword with blue shading and a golden hilt, symbolizing the struggles of the Semigallians against the German crusaders.
