Ūsiņš is the deity of spring and flourishing in Latvian mythology, a symbol of light and spring, and the patron of horses and bees.
It is one of the few Latvian deities for whom more or less true testimonies can be found in historical sources. Summer begins with Ūsiņi's Day, as Ūsiņš brings green grass to the fields and green leaves to the trees, so for Ūsiņi, boys first drove horses to pasture and plowing of fields began. Ūsiņš has its own written sign, which is similar to two E letters placed back to back. This sign is most often found in glove patterns. There was a belief that such gloves brought good luck to the wearer on their journey, and such gloves were called "atslēgaiņi" (key-gloves).
