Description of the Flag of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia

The Duchy of Courland and Semigallia (German: Herzogtum Kurland und Semgallen, Latin: Ducatus Curlandiae et Semigalliae, Polish: Księstwo Kurlandii i Semigalii) was an autonomous vassal state of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, that existed from 1562 to 1795. The Duchy encompassed most of the territories of Courland, Semigallia, and Selonia.

The establishment of the Duchy is linked to the events of the Livonian War, when the Livonian Confederation collapsed and its territories fell under the rule of the Lithuanian ruler Sigismund Augustus. The last Grand Master of the Livonian Order, Gotthard Kettler, became the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia and created a new state under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Duchy of Courland was a relatively autonomous state with its own administration, economy, and even colonial projects in the 17th century. However, the Duke's power was significantly limited by the powerful nobility, and the country was sometimes referred to as a republic of nobles under ducal rule.
