Finishing: Sewn edges with carabiners or a sleeve along the shorter side.
The ratio of the flag's width to length is 1:2.
The current flag of Riga was approved on May 4, 1937, based on the white and blue colors of 17th-century Riga ship flags, supplemented with the city's coat of arms.
The Riga flag is a rectangular fabric with two horizontal stripes of equal width – the upper stripe is light blue, the lower one is white. In the middle of the flag, on both sides, a colorful large coat of arms of Riga is depicted, its height being 2/5 of the flag's width.
The flag of the city of Riga (Latin: vexillum civitatis Rigensis) was first mentioned in a document signed by Riga Bishop Nicholas in 1232, but its color and shape are not mentioned. After 1282, sources mention that Riga ship flags had a white cross, but the flag's shape and color are not specified. However, in the revised Riga statutes from the beginning of the 14th century, it is noted that the main color of the flag was black.
